UPDATE! The newest client found in the release candidate of Vista does not require MUI files at all. There is some speculation that this may in fact end up as the Windows XP RDP 6 client. Download RDP 6 Client for Windows XP using this link.
I’ve been trying to get the Remote Desktop Connection v6.0 client from Vista to run on Windows XP for months now. Microsoft has announced many times that it’s available tobeta testers through the Connect site, but try as I may I still can’t find it (I’m not alone). So I went ahead and popped the new RDP 6 client from Vista onto Windows XP and tried everything from dependency walking to regsitry hacks to get it going but to no avail. So i kept testing, and set up a Google alert to let me know if anyone had found a method or any information that I could use to get this done.
I got results from the hook today, and what a big fish it was. It seems that I had probably fixed it early on, but hadn’t followed the proper procedure of changing one setting, testing, then moving to the next. I had simply set up all the hacks I thought were needed and plowed ahead. This is what happens when you test with a bottle in hand.
So here is what I found out today: originally from a thread by Caelum over at AtomicPC, this quick hack allows you to install the Microsoft Vista RDP v6 client on a Windows XP computer. Caelum was trying to get widescreen working in RDP on XP, and most of you know that works fine already. But Caelum, you’ve solved another problem in the process!
The 6th iteration of the MSTSC binary has a bunch of outstanding feautures. The biggest one for me is better support for sound and video over terminal services, but also includes ClearType support for those with LCD monitors so fonts look much nicer now.
Let’s get cracking.
1. Download this MSTSC zip(1.3MB)
2. Unpack the ZIP file to a folder

3. Run the “Install.cmd” file
4. Once the installation has completed, press any key to close the window
5. The script does everything but copy the MUI files to SYSTEM32, so we’ll do that now: open your Windows folder, then SYSTEM32, and then en-US. Copy the *.MUI files from your unzipped folder to the en-US folder
6. Run your remote desktop connection application the same way you normally would

Note: If you use Windows XP 64bit Edition you’ll want to grab the 64bit bit files from a 64bit version of Vista.
Now we can connect to Vista and Longhorn Terminal Server using the most up to date client and test the new features offered by Remote Desktop Client 6. I’ve tested this out on both using my VMWare Server virtual machines and the results are very favorable so far – it’s faster than before!

Sorry, good post, but not working for me. It seems XP is replacing the files right away with the old versions, even when manually copied. This seems to be due to Windows File Protection and there is likely a way to temporarily disable this.
Thanks, Ivan

Followup – Here is a page which details about disabling WFP – http://www.bitsum.com/aboutwfp.asp.
However, you can run the RDP6 client directly w/o replacing the XP client, just run it w/o the installation! Seems to connect & work fine connecting to Vista RC1.

I’d like to use the new Remote Desktop Client between two XP systems, largely for the application remoting feature. The trouble is, I remote extensively with my systems and can’t afford to mess it up too badly. Does this process only let you remote out with the new client, or does it also allow you to use the new client on an XP host? If it’s unknown, I may test on a weekend to see.
Thanks!

I went ahead and tested anyway. Without rebooting the host, it doesn’t seem like the new client overtakes the old one in terms of fielding the remoting request. A bit disappointing…

Here’s a link to the Vista BETA RDP Client for Windows XP. (It’s AT YOUR OWN RISK — UNSUPPORTED — and WILL BREAK REMOTE ASSISTANCE)

Hi!,
Is it possible to run Windows Network Projector Application in Vista from Windows XP by using RDP 6.0?
Thanks in advance,
Renjith Thomas -
Renjith, are you trying to share an application from Windows XP? I haven’t installed the beta file from the link that Me provided, but simply installing the RDP 6.0 client doesn’t seem to allow application publishing (I presume that’s what you mean by Projector Application).

Hi! Ledgem,
Thanks for u’r reply. Let me explain my question in detail.
In Vista there is a new feature called Windows Network Projector. It can be used to access a wireless network projector any where in the network and you can connect your desktop to the projector and you can access your slides from Conference room while u’r PC is some where else in the LAN. The NetProj application uses RDP 6.0. Through the link that you have provided I was able to get RDP 6.0 on WINXP.
The Network Projector application in VISTA is NetProj.exe and uses NetProjW.dll. My question is that, is it possible to get NetProj.exe and NetProjW.dll for WINXP. In VISTA its there is a considerable delay in transmitting the compressed/encrypted frame using RDP. I would like to analyse the performance of the application in WINXP. I am now working on a Network Projector based on WINCE 6.0
Best Regards,
Renjith -
I have replaced my Windows XP Pro MSTSC file with the one you have posted at the top of this thread (rdp v6) when I connect to my home machine which has Win Vista Ultimate final release, I get an error “Authentication Error (code 0xb09c)” that is the only message communicated to me, any ideas ? ?

RDP 6 has been released on the Microsoft Download Site, you might as well download it there as it will be easier.
