Civilization 5 Tactics and Strategies

This post will outline and detail strategies, tips, tricks, cheats and tactics for Sid Meier’s Civilization V (Civ5/CivV). Call it an FAQ of sorts.

Let’s get on with it, shall we?

Some quick observations:

  • Open borders allows you to surround an enemy, then attack. This works wonders later on.
  • The trebuchet seems a bit overpowered, and is definitely the best way to attack cities.
  • The easiest way I know of to skip the first intro movie is to simply rename “Civ5_Opening_Movie_en_US.wmv” to something else.
  • Alternatively, edit the “usersettings.ini” file found in “My Documents\My Games\Sid Meiers Civilization 5\”. Make sure to change “SkipIntroVideo=0” to “=1” on line 15.
  • For a copy of the English manual for Civ5, head here
  • How to turn on workers automatically keeping improvements
In the My Documents folder go to the Civ V folder and then look for the “usersettings.ini” file.

There is a setting called AutoWorkersDontReplace. Change the value from 0 to 1.

GRID Cheat Codes

Note that while these cheats may unlock cars that you want to own, the only one I would recommend is the Pagani Zonda R, for use in your first season.

Here’s why: much of the money you get from this game is through sponsors. When driving any of these cars, you will not get any sponsor money, as they are all ready “branded”, to use the GRID term.

That said, it’s pretty neat to unlock all of the drift cars as I find those events next to impossible, and some of you may find that having the muscle cars unlocked is a nifty trick.

Finally, if you want to race the car you’ve unlocked and have the money, you can actually purchase a new car, brand it, slap some sponsor logos on it, and you can race that to you heart’s content while being showered with oodles of dough in the hopes of signing some million dollar rookie.

Good luck!

Story

From the days of old, Melodica was a land of music, a land of freedom. The people sang, played and danced to the music they so cherished. Until one day, they came — the Mechanoids, who enhanced their bodies with machinery. Those who were tempted by greed and power willingly gave away their souls for bodies of steel, forsaking their humanity to become cold, emotionless automatons. Now, they seek to destroy all that do not embrace their way of life.

But there is hope on the horizon. There are those who are fated to stand against the tyranny of the machines — the Superstars, who can turn sound into lethal weapons, and the Conductor, also known as the Song Summoner, who can summon powerful warriors born of music.

In their most desperate hour, Melodica awaits the arrival of their new Song Summoner…

— Experience a turn-based tactics battle system, divided into player and enemy phases where each side takes turns maneuvering their forces.

— Deploy the right troopers at the right time, and use contraptions found on the map effectively to achieve victory in battle!

CoD4 Walkthrough Part 4: Blackout

Kill the two soldiers standing guard outside the house, as well as the two within. Use the silenced M4 so they don’t hear you coming. Grab the laptop inside to secure a piece of intelligence (3/30). Follow your team and clear the next grouping of houses. Follow Price into a house and exit into an open field for a rendezvous with Russian troops. Follow your team up the hill and get ready to make use of your sniper rifle. Help out where you can, but kill the machine gunners when ordered. Follow Kamarov through a building and back outside. Take cover in the building from the troops charging down the hill. Make a run up the hill when you don’t see any more approaching and then help the Russians take the town by sniping enemy troops from your high vantage point. Continue up the hill to the power station. Rappel down the cliffside and jump over the wall. Head into the village through the open garage and take cover behind the desk to kill the three soldiers that exit through the doorway. Jump out the window and go up the hill to the marked house. Equip your nightvision while you wait for Price to take point. Go through the house eliminating the soldiers guarding the informant. Go upstairs and clear all the rooms, including a bathroom on the second floor which contains another piece of intelligence (4/30). A good habit to form is to throw a flashbang into a room before you rush in, it could save your life. Follow the team outside to escort the informant to the waiting helicopter.

UPDATE – CoD4 1.2 Patch Released

Call of Duty 4 has been updated once again – another fast update for this very popular game.

The official forum thread is at the Infinity Ward forum, but you can click on this link to simply download the file.

Addressed in this update – left/vertical lean offset glitch, and files have been modified in order to prepare for future mods – good to see them thinking ahead already as many players are still whining about non-issues like sniper rifles and such. This patch also includes the 1.1 update which addressed issues that had users losing ranks, profiles and XP when switching from ranked to un-ranked or modded servers.
No apparent issues with the CoD4 1.2 patch yet – I’m keeping my ears to the ground.

CoD4 Multiplayer Configuration Tweaks

Here is my modified Call of Duty 4 multiplayer config (cfg), please note my screen resolution is 1440×900, and I’m using a Geforce 8600GT. Your results may vary, but I get a pretty consistent 90 frames per second (fps) most of the time using these tweaks.

CoD4 Single Player Cheats

Here are some simple single player tips, tricks, and cheats for the Call of Duty 4 single player mode on PC.

Start up Call of Duty 4 single player, go into your options, and make sure that the console is enabled.

Press your ~ (tilde) key anytime you want to enter these codes in – you can keep entering them.
First off, type seta thereisacow "1337", this enables most of the cheats.

In order to pick a level, use spdevmap mapname

Here are some handy console commands that may help you through the game:

  • ufo – you can fly through walls to get places – be careful, this can mess things up a little, and you may get stuck
  • give – gives you an item. If you type give all, you will get all weapons
  • god – god mode!
  • demigod – god mode, but some things still happen like screen shaking and such
  • notarget – you will be invisible to enemies
  • give ammo – instant ammo
  • jump_height – allows you to change the physics in the game – like moon shoes
  • timescale – let’s you play with time – fast or slow
  • cg_LaserForceOn – laser sight, baby!

Call of Duty 4 Cheats – Unlock All Ranks and Perks

Unlock everything easily!

Well someone was bound to do it…

The memory address that contains the CoD4 XP has been located, and you can now modify it, making leveling up a much faster and easier process. This means that you can easily get the Commander Rank within a few hours of buying the game, and you can unlock all perks and weapons.

The memory address needed is: CBF0E68

You can use a tool such as Tsearch to edit the value of that address (your XP), so that you’ll only need one XP to get to the new CoD 4 rank.

Here’s how: open Tsearch, start a new script, enter the memory address, then enter in the XP you would like. Keep in mind – you’ll want to back up your Call of Duty 4 profile just in case something goes wrong – YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

More details: if you just want to quickly go up a level, take your current XP from the Rank screen in the multiplayer mode, then add the amount of XP you will need to go up a level. You’ll want to subtract one or two XP in order to make it easy to gain a level. Then, go online and kill someone, or get an assist – BAM! – instant level up, and possibly a new rank.

Overkill perk, here you come!

Seriously, though, I tested this method, and found it much more enjoyable to play through multiplayer the real way – it’s more of a challenge, and fun!
