Call of Duty 4 Perk Descriptions/Guide

Here is complete guide to the perks found in Call of Duty 4, as well as some personal tactics gleaned from my first few days with the games, as well as from talking to others. The perks are a very satisfying addition to CoD in my opinion, and add another level to the game, making it very addictive as you try to collect all the perks that completely change the way you play the game. The levels needed per perk are listed after the perk name.
Perk 1:
Bomb Squad (14)
The Bomb Squad perk allows you to detect explosives planted in the map. This is useful if you are up against people who just love using bombs, and have C4 and Claymores hidden throughout the map. The Bomb Squad perk is unlocked at level 14 – Staff Sergeant I.

C4 Explosives x2 (2)
The C4 Explosives perk gives you two C4 explosives that you can detonate remotely using the fire button, or if you are using your primary weapon you can detonate them by double tapping the “use” button (the default mapping is F). In Call of Duty 4, there are no binoculars, so make sure you are aware of your enemy’s location before setting them off – I find this also a bit difficult, but on some level night vision comes in handy. C4 Explosives are unlocked as soon as you unlock the Demolitions Class – level 2, Private I.

Claymore x 2
Claymores are basically a mine that you can plant in the game to blow people up when they are in range. The calymore packs use light sensors, and typical will be visible before you stumble upon one. The explosion is very directional, and because of this the Claymore perk isn’t very useful in situations you would typically use mines. That said, I’ve had good luck hiding these things just around corners out of sight where people can’t see the garish red beams emanating from these things. Claymores are unlocked at the onset of the game.

RPG-7 x 2
The RPG-7 x2 perk gives you two ground-to-air missiles that are very useful for shooting down helicopter air strikes. It should also be noted that they can explode cars and other destrutible objects on the map, and are very fun to shoot at spawn points, followed by a cooked nade.

Special Grenades x 3
This is my favorite among the Perk 1 group – this one gives you 3 special grenades as opposed to just one. Why is it my fave? Well, combine this with stun grenades, the radar, and the “x” indication that you’ve hit someone, and it’s a great way to find out where people are, run up to them, and knife them with your hobo knife, even from far away! The Sepcial Grenades perk is unlocked by default.

Frag x 3 (41)
The Frag x3 perk gives you three frag grenades – simple huh? Not really, once this is unlocked, you’ll find the maps littered with grenades – try as you will to pick them up and throw them back, more are on the way! This perk is unlocked at level 41 – Colonel I.

Bandolier (32)
The Bandolier perk gives you much more amo for your clip, and is my second favorite among the Perk 1 set because it goes so well with the Double Tap perk. If you like to sprint around, doing some spray and pray while having a beer like me, this is definitely a must-try. The Bandolier perk is unlocked at level 32 – Captain I.
Perk 2:
Juggernaut
The Juggernaut perk, well… makes you a juggernaut! You can take a LOT more damages than usual, and still be standing. Typically this means that I can survive 2 badly fought 1-on-1 rounds and still be running around like a chicken with my head cut off. This perk is unlocked straight away as far as I can tell.

Sleight of Hand (20)
Sleight of Hand helps you to reload weapons a lot faster, and if you can’t aim, like to spray and pray, and run around without reloading or watching your amo, this may be for you. Truth be told, this comes in very handy for shotgun and SAW users, but just about any one can use this. Sleight of Hand is unlocked at Master Sergeant I (Lv20).

Stopping Power
Stopping Power gives your weapon some oompf, and remoes the pew-pew! This is a good addition to weapons like the Mini Uzi, that while very fast, certainly lacks power. The Stopping Power perk is unlocked by default.

UAV Jammer (11)
The UAV Jammer perk helps to keep you off the radar, even when firing shots. This perk is useful against seasoned players who have become accustomed to watching the radar like hawks, and know all of the hiding places already. I highly recommend trying this with the Dead Silence perk and a knife. UAV Jammer is unlocked at level 11, Sergeant I.

Sonic Boom
The Sonic Boom perk gives your explosions some added range, and is great when used with the Martyrdom perk because it will see you taking out many people at a time as the grenade you drop will have a larger blast radius. This perk is unlocked out of the gates.

Overkill (38)
Easily the best perk in the game, Overkill allows you to carry two primary weapons at once, in the primary and secondary slots. This means you can fulfill your dreams of being a sniper/shotgunner! You simply change weapons to where your pistol would be, and there’s your other weapon. This is great because you can switch weapons faster than you can reload, in my case, but also because it opens the maps up so that everyone can carry an ACOG weapon as well as an LMG/SMG or what-have-you. Highly recommended, worth all of the effort.

Double Tap (29)
Double Tap increases the rate of fire for your weapon. This really helps balance things out for weapons that have a slow rate of fire, and makes some weapons like the M16 MUCH better. I highly recommend using this perk with the Bandolier perk as you’ll be going through a lot more amo than usual. The Double Tap perk is unlocked at level 29 (1st Lieutenant I).

Perk 3:
Extreme Conditioning
The Extreme Conditioning perk allows you to run for a much longer time, and is great in maps where you need to get to a certain point faster than someone else, or when you are trying to escape someone. The amount of time of the increase is roughly 2 times the normal sprint time. The Extreme Conditioning perk is unlocked for the get-go.

Steady Aim
The Steady Aim perk give you better aim when not using iron sights or what-have-you. When you are running around in CoD4, your head and body bob, and affect your aim much more than in previous Call of Duty games. This perk restores some of the stability found in other CoD games, and makes aiming while running that much easier. This perk is unlocked already.

Last Stand (8)
Last stand gives you one last chance to shoot the person who killed you with your pistol sidearm. This can be useful on servers filled with beginners, but players are quickly getting used to finishing people of gangland-style because so many beginners are using this. Also, most medium to high ranked players will be using the Martyrdom perk, and since you’re only equipped with a pistol you can normally only tag people close to you, and once they die they drop a grenade and … well you’re dead. the Last Stand perk is unlocked early on, at Corpral II (Lv8).

Deep Impact
A lot of weapons in CoD4 can now shoot through things like corrugated steel, boxes and thin walls. The Deep Impact perk emphasizes this, but also gives lower powered weapons a bit of a boost. I’ve had good results using this and the M16 and the P90. Deep Impact is unlocked by default, as far as I can tell.

Dead Silence (44)
The Dead Silence perk is one of my favorites because I love sneaking around maps stabbing people with my stabbing knife. Dead Silence makes you virtually silent, so that people don’t hear floorboards creak as you walk up behind them with your knife out, just waiting to slash. Dead Silence is unlocked high level of 44, Brigadier General I, but is definitely worth it, and is amazing when combined with a silenced gun and UAV jamming. Or just use a knife!

Iron Lungs (26)
The Iron Lungs perk is interesting. The whole sniper class has caused quite a stir with Call of Duty fans because it is much harder to snipe in CoD4. This perk helps by allowing you to hold your breath longer, and keep the gun steady. I’m told the real trick to sniping in Call of Duty 4 is to have this perk, hold shift while you aim down the scope, and pause for just a half second longer than normal, and you will hit the mark everytime. Definitely worth trying with the Barret 50cal. Iron Lungs is unlocked at level 26 – 2nd Lieutenant I.

Eavesdrop (35)
Eavesdrop is an interesting perk – it allows you to listen in on enemy chatter as you fight. I’m not sure how you can’t hear them already, but this let’s you hear them talking about their UAV as well as the bound speech items that some people use. Maybe they use microphones? Anyway, this is a great tool to use against those using stealth perks that make them hard to find on a map, and on the radar. The Eavesdrop perk is unlocked before the dead silence perk as well – you get it at level 35, Major I.

Martyrdom (17)
Martyrdom is one of the most popular perks, and also one of the most annoying. This perk lets you drop a live grenade just after dying, typically killing whoever just tore you up. This has people now sprinting away from corpses, as well as shooting at them just in case they have Last Stand instead. Because of this, if you’re sneaking up on someone who is about to kill someone, be prepared and have your pistol out to shoot them quickly before they run away. Also, if one of your team members has just killed the enemy in a closed room, be careful not to get caught in the door as you both run out. Finally, if you can, try picking up the dropped greande, and throw it at another enemy. I’ve only been able to do this in open spaces so far, and it needs to be done very quickly, but if you’ve just done a slashing, you’ll be right on top of the nade which makes things a bit easier. But you don’t slash in wide open spaces, now, do you? Martyrdom is unlocked level 17 – Gunnery Sergeant I.

  1. how do i know this stuff because we talk to people , and friends who worked for sony they never got shit from them till they up and left them and started working for microsoft. want to know more just ask

  2. Wow guys…
I just realized we’d gone beyond 50 comments on this one.
I’ve just instituted comment karma so that you can rate each others comments – hopefully that will make things a bit more sane.
Thanks for all the good comments.
Even though the PS3/Xbox360/Wii flamewar seems excessive – I don’t mind in the least.

  3. Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is actually a much better multiplayer experience–the best on the planet actually, but people are too stupid to actually play as their class and complete objectives. Which is why I jumped on the band wagon and got COD4. When a mod comes out making it more like ET:QW with assault/defend modes, I will be happy again.

  4. [quote]”When a mod comes out making it more like ET:QW with assault/defend modes, I will be happy again.”[\quote]

Right Mike what your basically sayin is you want Search and Destroy renamed? Just so you know mike its attack and defend for people who know wats going on.

  5. C4 Explosives x2 (2)
The C4 Explosives perk gives you two C4 explosives that you can detonate remotely using the fire button, or if you are using your primary weapon you can detonate them by double tapping the fire button. I find this a bit cumbersome with some weapons, but to each his own. In Call of Duty 4, there are no binoculars, so make sure you are aware of your enemy’s location before setting them off – I find this also a bit difficult, but on some level night vision comes in handy. C4 Explosives are unlocked as soon as you unlock the Demolitions Class – level 2, Private I.

ive tried double tapping the fire button with my primary weapon but it doesnt set off my c4 explosive..can u tell me what im doing wrong..because im tired of switch back to the remote and by the time i can get ready to set it off they kill me..lol help me

  6. I’ve been reading the comments about the PS3 and the 360 and I have both. I bought my PS3 in March and my 360 Elite in July. I like certain things about both, but my PS3 hasn’t even been on since mid July so I guess you can guess which one I like better.

  7. I own a 360.

for you ps3 fans to gloat: i got the ring of death the day after i got call of duty 4. i wont be playing any xbox for a month.

and for you 360 fans to gloat: from what i hear… there is no ps3 game thats 9.5 out of 10 that cannot be found on the 360

    =]

now that i have ticked off fans from both consoles, i will be deleting all hate mail recieved.

  8. why does everyone keep fighting over if the PS3 or 360 is better? I think we all need to come to the realization that watching midget porn is a much better use of someone’s time than playing PS3 or 360.

  9. 360 is better than ps3 360 online is better and games are better its cheaper and fuck sony. what ever buy your ps3 but your going to get shitty severs and online!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Sigh. All of you are idiots: Real men play the PC. Others are just mewling weaklings waiting to be sacrificed to Armok.

  11. duncan you call yourself a man and then say the nerdiest thing ive ever read. well done you big man….. feel better?

  12. haha “real men play the PC” funny

To all PC gamers coming in waving your graphics cards. whats more fun a console or a pc? (oh and consoles don’t require a new graphics card monthly to play games)

    360.
Is definatly top at the momunt with its huge selection of games and live that kicks ass!

    Ps3.
I look forward to one of there games, metal gear solid.

On a more call of duty note, i find a few combinations usefull.

    Rocket trooper
    Perk 1: RPG (instant granade)
Perk 2: Sonic boom (The blast is very good for getting people)
Perk 3: steady aim (Me and my friend thinks the rocket flys straighter but not completly straight)

    Spray N Pray
perk 1: bondolier (need more ammo)
Perk 2: Double tap (the amount the saw sprays out is amazing)
Perk 3: deep impact (great for cleering rooms with out going in them)

Give them a try guys you might like.

  13. Consoles kick PC ass, you can have buddies over to play instead of sitting alone infront of your computer, you don’t have to go out paying crazy money for a top of the line computer then put tons of cash into graphics cards and crap like that. for 500 bucks my 360 will give me at least 4 years of enjoyment. normal span for a computer these days anyways. and with live the gameplay is virtually endless.

P.S. Call of Duty 4 kicks ass!

  14. Zone tr0oper – “To all PC gamers coming in waving your graphics cards. whats more fun a console or a pc? (oh and consoles don’t require a new graphics card monthly to play games)”

PC, hands down. A mouse and keyboard provide more precision, control, and options than a console controller ever could. Couple that with the fact that a PC is more versatile than consoles currently are (I personally enjoy listening to music during gameplay, and with certain games [mmo’s mainly] I like to keep an Internet Explorer window open to reference online game information).

Also, certain game types, RTS, turn based strategy, MMO, and specialty software (console emulators, edutainment, free/cheapware) favor PC’s.

PC’s do require more than just a rudimentary knowledge of menu navigation in order play games on them, and PC’s have a tendency to develop complex “issues” (IThinkIWannaBeABlueScreenOfDeathNow,K?). Still, I’d rather game on a PC anyday.

    On topic:

    Playing with Snipers
Perk 1: Bomb Squad (or x3 special nades)
    Perk 2: UAV Jammer
    Perk 3: Dead Silence

Great for clearing out buildings and taking out snipers. I normally use this on building infested maps with decent open areas, ie sniper breeding grounds (Crash, Strike, and Crossfire come to mind). Just pack a shotty or submachine gun and avoid line of sight as you run from building to building.

  15. you ps3 users/fans make me laugh. Why argue with the arrogant xbox users? If you’ve noticed, all the abuse and swearing has come from the Bill Gates fans. Why is this? BECAUSE TRUTH HURTS!!!

Firstly, PS3 might have Sh*t games, but im happy with it. I could just sit there with no games thinking ‘this is a great investment’, compared to the 3 Xbox 360s I had, all with the ring of death and broken disks.

Secondly, the Ps3 features, blow Xbox’s up. O’ wait a minute, you need the extra media centre software to hook it up to a server.

Thirdly, we have wireless, Blu-ray and motion sensitive controllers all built in as standed. Yh’ you can buy Wireless and HD DVD Players, but w wants all them extra accessoriess making there home look crammed up and un-tidy???

Fourthly, We have the PSP which can link up to the PS3 from anywhere in the world and access our HDD to watch films, play games and listen to music. What do you have?

Fifthly, Your xbox is Windows based. Our PS3 is Linux based. Windows is designed on Linux as it is more efficient and more stable. So you’ve got to expect your console to break down regulary.

Sixthly, our PS3 supports plug and play with lots of stuff eg web cams, keyboard, memory sticks, Ipods. And all of this is as standed. Yours needs most things to be developed esspecially for it like your web cam.

Thelist continues for example, the wirless controllers. Ours recharge free of charge. Yous need batteries or You can Buy an additional battery pack. Should I continue??? I think thats enough home truths for now.

BY THE WAY COD4 IS SIMPLY AMAZING!!! CANT WAIT FOR EXPANSION PACKS TO BE RELEASE.

To all the xbox users. See th light, I did. Trade you 360 in for the PS3 and we’ll welcome you with open arms. LMAO

  16. @ Dang Le. The article is incorrect, you are meant to double tap the USE key (default F) to detonate the C4, but remember you have to do it FAST or it won’t work. Another handy feature is to just shoot it.

  17. Dont understand where this console war came from… W/e i game on pc and couldnt be happier, and i can never get used to aiming on the console controllers… btw I have a Wii and its a blast. Great fun at parties or with just a couple friend over.

What do you guys prefer for COD4?

Lots of people on maps like overgrown, downpour etc
Or small amount of people on same maps.

And if someone has the patience, they can go on listing all of pc’s (or mac’s) features. I would like to see the stack up against consoles.

Most of my friends have a 360. Actually none of them have a PS3 so i cant stack it against the 360… Btw whoever said 360 accesories make ur house look cluttered is a retard. That was the worst comment I’ve seen on here and i read this entire thread. Btw, Wii and 360 use Ati video cards, and PS3 uses Nivdia. Just putting it out there

  18. lol @ Ryan, he sounds like a DESPERATE sony salesman……both systems rock….but numbers say that xbox 360 owns the fuck out of playstation 3…all my friends have xbox 360 as well, and a few have wii, NONE have playstation 2 or 3 LOL

  19. All yall lil pussy ass xbox 360 fans need to shut yalls damn mouth. And have fun returning yo piece of shit 360 back to microsoft because the piece of shit got the red ring of death. By the way have 1 friend that sold his 360 in a week because it sucks dick, and another that had to return his 5 times cuz it got the red ring of death. Own a ps3 myself.

  20. XBOX 360 fans:
PS3 isnt a blowoff of the 360. Heck, there wasn’t even such thing as an XBOX when the first PS ONE came out !! Therefore the sony playstation series is original and when the PS2 came out, then that’s when the first XBOX came out and started jocking all these games that the PS2 had. The only thing that makes the XBOX original is because of HALO. And for all the people who are bragging about the prices of the consoles, the reason why 360 is so cheap is because you’re paying ONLINE, and that 3 rings of death can happen anytime. The reason why PS3 is so expensive is that you have to remember that you’re also paying for a BLU RAY DISC PLAYER which is one of the best quality home theater out there and the internet is free.

  21. Hey thanks for the info. About the UAV Jammer…it is only effective to keep you off radar when an enemy UAV is deployed. If you are shooting without a silenced weapon you will appear on enemy radar until you stop shooting. thanks

  22. Thank you for writing this I found it very helpful, I also think that Dead Silence is very good, I use it with Over Kill, Silenced AK74u and a Silenced AK47, I called the class “Sneeky Soviet” Hehe I get a lot of kills because especially in Pipeline when people try to hurry up the ladder, I shoot down at them or anyone else in the inside room, and people don’t see me near the top of the ladder if they jump in through the window of the top floor, this is how I got my 19 kill streak. Thats interesting that you say the M16 is good with double tap, I only use it with automatic weapons like the M4 or some submachine guns, especially the P90 and the Mp5 but does it really make such a difference that 3 bullets shoot faster? Usually they’re all going to the same place anyway

  23. Sorry I also forgot to say, what does everyone think the best pistol is? I thought the Desert Eagle because it was so big and strong, but I’ve been using the USP .45 in last stand, and it almost works every time, this gun you get right in the beginning and I don’t see many people using it…

  24. I like the USP as well, and you’re right about people just assuming that because it is the default, that it’s not worthwhile.
In fact, I have found that all of the default weapons and perks have merit, and have found myself playing through to the highest rank from the beginning just to learn new ways to use weapons and perks because it is so addictive you just keep pushing yourself forward.
I’d love to do a post on favorite perk and weapons combos – if anyone has any just let me know, you’ll get credit and we’ll post them up.

  25. Anyone argueing over the console wars are just a bunch of no’life idiots trying to put down other gamers who enjoy having different features included in different consoles. Who cares what console you use, as long as you enjoy it to the full extent of how much you paid for it, and by the way, Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare is the absolute best designed multiplayer game with virtually endless customization options and I will rarely ever be taking the disc out of my 360 until the new COD is released. Yes, I have a 360, not because it’s better, but because all my friends have it. If all my friends had a PS3, I would have one too.

  26. Bottom line is that XBox owners will end up paying more for their investment than PS3 owners.

    COD:4 pwns face

  27. Oh, btw, if any PS3 owner wants to get together and play some COD:4 sometime, im usually always on playing. my username is AureliusVin, I dont have a mic yet, but will have in the next week or so.

  28. All i can say is im all for the 360. Anyone who goes on about how “the ps3 has better games and graphics” can shut the hell up and get a reality check. Go have a look at Call Of Duty 4 on the xbox then take a look at it on the ps3….. i think u will change your mind, otherwise go back to your “high gig ps3 gaming which doesnt make any difference whatsoever.

  29. Hey, all I know is that I got a PS3 as a present a year ago (I really wanted one, loved my PS2) and then got beat up fo over a year because it only had 3-4 good games. Lately though, I’ve bought 4-5 games from the online store (Warhawk is amazing) and have a nice little growing collection of games and Blu-Ray movies.

I could care less about the “battle” and I only know that I’m really happy finally. Yes, it took some time though. Now there’s some great games coming for both systems this year so we all should be happy and quit thinking who’s grass is greener.

Oh yeah, CoD 4 is amazing! My favorite setup so far:

    SPARTAN:
    Primary: M4 Carbine (Red Dot)
    Secondary: M1911 .45
    Perk 1: Claymore x2 or RPG-7 x2
    Perk 2: Stopping Power
    Perk 3: Deep Impact
    Stun x1/Frag x1
Desert Camo This is my main hitter. I’ve used this setup to the best success on many maps. The combination of perks means I hit real hard and can still punch through most of the cover people have available to them. Sometimes I swap in the M16A1 (Red Dot) if the map is real large.

  30. Stop posting about the console war please!

    GHOST:
    Primary: AK-74u (Silenced)
    Secondary: M1911 .45 (Silenced)
Perk 1: Bandolier (or Flash x3)
    Perk 2: UAV Jammer
    Perk 3: Steady Aim
    Woodland Camo

Works best on Downpour and Wet Work.

    SHOTGUNNER:
    Primary: M1014 (Grip)
    Secondary: Desert Eagle
    Perk 1: (Weapon Attachment)
    Perk 2: Sleight of Hand
    Perk 3: Steady Aim
    Gold Camo 😉

Works best on Wet Work and Overgrown.

Check ’em out and see if you like 🙂

  31. KILLER:

    PRIMARY: M16 W/ RED DOT.
    P90 SILENCED
    FRAG X3
    OVERKILL
    DEEP IMPACT

if you don’t like this then switch the weapons up. but i like the M16 for med. to long range maps like bog or crash. the p90 is also usefull if you are in levels like vacant or countdown. the p90 is the best cuz if u can hook it up wit uav jamma & deep impact and if you throw a silencer on dat bi#@h! you can go behind enemy lines and own them from behind

  32. i dont get why people think the mouse allows for more ‘precision’ you control the joysticks on a controller with your thumbs….evolutionary speaking your thumb is more developed for sensitive movements than say…your entire hand? i can snipe a lot more easily using my thumbs as guides than my palm moving over a flat surface….

personally i never like playing games on the computer…it just doesnt seem like a video game, i’d rather play on a tv. and for the people that say graphics are better on pc who gives a fuck? the graphics are extremely good on all next gen consoles as well as the pc…the difference is not significant….

regardless, halo owns everything, the multiplayer is the best thing in the world and its not available on either ps3 or pc. now go fuck yourselves

  33. ps3 cod4: need to open ports for the update and u get alot of error n shit
xbox 360 cod4: no need to open ports quick play, and no cheaters on it

  34. All of you who complain about the PC version and say how it is easier on joystick, buy a REAL mouse, a logitech one with the ball not a shitty one that you need to move around

  35. For all of you PS3 fanboys, go to YouTube.com and search “It’s a Wonderful Live 2”. It should be made by Machinima.com/DigtalPh33r. It’ll show you out and it explains everything I want to say about PS3 fanboys(NOTE~COARSE LANGUAGE! PRECEED AT YOUR OWN RISK). Now here’s an excellent combo for CoD4:

    -Spec Ops.
    *GUNS
    MP5 SD5 (MP5 with silencer.)
    Any pistol w/ silencer
    *PERKS
Bandoiler (Believe me, you need this.)
    UAV Jammer
    Last Stand/Martyrdom (I perfer Martyrdom.)
    ——–
This will make sure that you go undetected ANYWHERE. I personally like that one because it makes knifing people fun. Here’s another:

    -Defense
    *GUNS
    R700
    MP5 SD5 (MP5 with silencer.)
    *PERKS
    Claymore x2
    Overkill
    Iron Lungs
    ——–
Just a good sniper/CQB combo. I use it a lot. Those are just two of my combos. Thanks for reading.

  36. k, listen!! I have the 360 and I’m not allowed getting cod4!!!!! I am soooo pissed but I have one last chance:->! Some one plz tell me if you can turn off the blood effects In cod 4 for the 360!!!!!!! PLZ!!!!!!!you will be my hero if u tell me!!!!!
    thx soooooooooooooooooooooooo much!!!

  37. OK this is the best perk giude ever it is very easy to follow and very informative THANK YOU whoever wrote this guide 🙂

  38. I have looked on my sons 360 cod 4 options and there is nothing to tweak reference visuals (blood). I may be a stupid old pc gamer but i dont think you can turn blood off on the pc version either? I’m sure you could on the original cod.

  39. I stand corrected you can on the pc in options/game options/blood.

The 360 does not have this. I hope this sort of helps?

  40. Btw, do any
of ya have frontlines:fow? Its an awesome game on xbox live but not single player cause it takes 3 sniper shots to kill a guy( 1 shot if its a headshot)! My gamertag is Chickenweed.
